Remember the Stars

First, remember the stars.

No matter how great our ugliness grows, it will never have the power to touch the astronomically huge beauty that simply exists–for eternity–whether we acknowledge it or not.

This difficult day (and indeed your entire life) is but a moment. It will pass. The truth is, on the grandest scale, today doesn’t change things much at all.

Of course, neither do you nor I nor anyone we know. We’re dust in a cosmic landscape that will not remember us.

I don’t write this to induce feelings of powerlessness, loneliness, or despair.

I write it because it’s the truth, and if you want peace and freedom, you have to sit with truth and accept it. Let’s have the courage to try to see reality for what it is.

Vast beauty.

Maybe you can argue that most of that space is made up of darkness. But think for one moment about everything you love and hold most dear. Remember that it grew up in the glow of one tiny little pinprick on the canvass of the universe. A little light can go a long way.

You don’t have to shine with the brightness of a supernova. Not today. Just a little light will do. Keep the flame lit. Protect it. Nurture the warmth. Soon enough, it will turn back into sunshine.
