American Freedom

Every human soul yearns for freedom,
cries out for the opportunity to leap forth,
unfurl its wings to their fullest span,
test one's capacity for flight.

America's great original and abiding sin
is its belief that in order for some to fly,
others, our brothers and sisters,
must be shot down,
roped to the tree,
or pressed to the ground.

Our most important work as Americans
is to free our minds from that unholy
and disgusting lie,
to believe in and work for this Truth:
The heavens have more than enough capacity
to hold us all.
